OUTREACH PROGRAMMES
Ankur
Vidyalaya is a project begun in 1991 by the LTS girls
as a Literacy programme
to share the benefits of being in a good school
with less fortunate children.
Today, with the help of Staff and students it is a
flourishing parallel
school with 80 children on the rolls. Boys and girls from
5 years upward are admitted to the classes. The medium of
instruction is Hindi and the class timings are 8 a.m. to
12.15 p.m. Every student from Class 6 –Class 10
takes a
turn to share her knowledge with the children
on a one-to-one basis. They are supervised by two
trained teachers The children of each class in turn also
sit down to share their tiffin once a week with the Ankur
Vidyalaya children. Since 1997 a few pupils have been
prepared for the National Open School examination.
Regular
midday meals, medical checkups, eyecamps clothes and
books, singing and dancing, sports and participation in
various functions make life meaningful for these children.
Another
outreach programme is a Vocational training class. Knitting and tailoring
classes are
held in the school premises from 12.30 to 3.30 p.m. for
young ladies of the neighbourhood who need to find ways to
support themselves or their families. Once they have
mastered the skills the ladies take orders for garments
and provide cardigans, shawls for the school children and
teachers of our school and other local schools.
The
students entertain the handicapped children of the
Cheshire homes and
Anandam before Christmas and provide a meal
and gifts which are sometimes made by the ladies of
the the Vocational training
class.
