Our History
The
real history of Entally begins in 1947 with the purchase
of the beautiful grounds and 2 small houses by the
Vicariate for Loreto Orphanage. Various wars and famines
in those early days added to the number of orphaned and
destitute children. The Goiran building containing
classrooms and two spacious and airy dormitories was
completed in 1859, mainly through the generosity and
co-operation of the Goiran family and other donors. The
Goethals building was erected in the closing years of
1880s and consists of the present dining room, Concert
Hall and Senior Dormitory.
In
1881 the present church was constructed. The technical
school was opened in 1903 giving instructions in cooking,
sewing, shorthand and typing but was temporarily
discontinued in the seventies.
In
1912 the school for Bengali speaking children was opened.
This is now a large complex managed independently by the
Daughters of St. Anne.
The
infirmary was built in 1916.
In
1965 the present large School Building was erected with
another wing completed in 1968 providing further
classrooms and the teachers' quarters above.
In
the 80s when the Modern School Final exam was
discontinued, the Open School exam was introduced to help
children of varying ability to get a school leaving
certificate. The Vocational Training Centre was also
recently revived with jute handicrafts and a bakery both
of which have a steady outlet.
