Our History
Our
School was started in 1854, being first housed in Bithakhana Church
compound under the management of the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. It was the second Loreto Day school to open in Calcutta being
pre dated by Loreto Bowbazar.
In 1879,
the Loreto Sisters left the school in order to start Loreto Dharamtalla and
for 23 years it was looked after by some pious ladies.
In 1902,
it moved to its present premises, which were donated by the Archbishop of
Calcutta, and the Loreto sisters returned, travelling to and from Loreto
House by “horse gharry”. The remains of the old stable inside the gate
are still to be seen in the cobbled flooring.
In 1927,
the concert hall and large classroom above was constructed and in 1932,
the free school block inside the gate was built.
In spite of many plans, no further construction took place until 1980
when the concert hall block was demolished to allow for a large four storey
block in its place providing 12 new classrooms and staffroom as well as a
spacious undercroft for games.
In 1988,
the old building was renovated to provide 3 floors in what had been a two
floor building.
In 1997,
the school acquired the property next door which had originally belonged to
Sir Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose and having demolished the old building put
up another four storey block which is now used extensively for teacher
training and other outreach programmes.
