Our
History
In 1971,
the Loreto Sisters agreed to take over the management of a
Bengali-medium primary
School that had been started by Archbishop Dyer and was
run by a group of parishioners since 1965. It was situated
beside the parish church of the Sacred Heart.
Sr. Enda
O’Connor the Principal of Loreto Sealdah took charge of
the school and commuted regularly between the two schools.
In
1973-74 living
quarters were prepared
on the premises
and 3 Sisters began to reside there,
Srs.
Pauline Prince,Cecily Wong and Deepika Biswas.
Besides the school work Sr. Pauline also started a
mother – child care programme which later developed into
the CINI programme.
They were
followed by Srs.
Vida Graham, Rosario O’Donnell and Evelyn O’Connor. A
regular feeding programme was
begun for the children consisting of
a nourishing meal at midday and
a milky porridge when they arrived. This continues
to date.
Sr.Vida
also began sewing and knitting classes for the mothers and
young women while Sr.Rosario
took on the work of adult instruction and marriage
preparation.
The
numbers in the school increased and
now they have classes from kindergarten to Class 6
with 292 children. The children’s playground has been
developed.
There are
regular programmes of song and dance in which the children
take part happily. They also enjoy
their annual Sports Day and the Christmas
celebration.
