History
This
department of Loreto House was started in 1955 at the
request of Dr. Austin D’Souza, Inspector of Anglo-Indian
Schools, who felt there was an urgent need in the State,
to provide training for girls to be Primary School
teachers in English medium schools.
Sr.
Consiglio Frayne was the Superior who undertook to
initiate this training, and Sr. Patricia Hickey became the
first Head of Department and remained so for several
years. Sr. Paul Cummins and Sr. Monica D’Costa were
among the first members of the staff, with Mrs. Phyllis
Pearson.
The
department was given recognition by the Govt. of West
Bengal in 1955 and the examination is conducted the School
Education Department which also gives the certification.
It began with 15 students on the rolls.
